1.FINA Is Now World Aquatics

A pool operator may ask for “FINA lighting” when planning an upgrade. FINA adopted the name World Aquatics in 2023, so current tenders should identify the exact World Aquatics document and event level. The old name remains a useful search term, but it is not enough for a technical specification.
The key question is what the pool must host. Public swimming, local training, national competition, and global broadcast events use different visual tasks. The brief must also name the pool length, start and turn ends, camera positions, spectator areas, lifeguard views, and whether underwater visibility forms part of the safety review.
2.Published Competition Values
The 2026 World Aquatics Competition Regulations require at least 1,500 lx over the whole pool at Olympic Games and World Aquatics events. For other competitions, they require at least 600 lx over starting platforms and turning ends. The swimming pool certification form also asks for a lighting report. These are measured requirements, not product wattages.
World Aquatics does not give one universal community-pool lighting class. A community project must use the applicable national or regional standard, building rules, safety duties, and owner brief. The CPS IES RP-6 overview is relevant to North American work, while other markets may use EN 12193 or a national sports-lighting standard.
3.Lux Is Only the Starting Point
Useful natatorium lighting must also control uniformity, water-surface reflection, vertical illuminance, colour rendering, flicker, and direct glare. A high average value can hide dark lane ends or mirrored bright patches. Side-mounted asymmetric optics can send light across the pool while keeping luminaires accessible from dry maintenance routes.

The CPS swimming-pool lighting guide explains the water interface and high-humidity environment. The separate IP and corrosion guide covers enclosure and material risks. Both optical and environmental performance must remain valid through the intended maintenance period.
4.Community to Olympic Briefs
This table separates a federation rule from a complete design brief. The Eh and Ev engineering guide explains why horizontal light on water and vertical light on swimmers or cameras must be checked together.
5.Simulation and Acceptance
The calculation model should use verified IES or LDT files, final mounting coordinates, tilt angles, water and deck reflectance assumptions, camera planes, and maintenance factor. The DIALux and AGi32 guide connects the design grid with field measurements.
After installation, the team should confirm luminaire codes, optics, aiming, control scenes, and stable output. It should measure the specified pool grid and critical start and turn zones with calibrated instruments. A CPS Grade IV swimming-pool case used 50 TLX-0400 luminaires for its competition pool and separate fixtures for spectator and emergency zones. Those quantities belong to that project and must not be copied without simulation.
A defensible handover includes the governing rules, calculation file, aiming schedule, measurement report, scene settings, product data, and maintenance plan. That evidence turns a claimed FINA pool lighting standard into a verifiable operating result.
