[Basketball] Grade VI Indoor Lighting Retrofit Project

LED sports lighting for Basketball and International Judo

CPS Lighting designs and supplies professional LED sports lighting systems. This Wuhan University of Technology Gymnasium project combined an indoor basketball setting with the broadcast requirements of judo at the 2019 Military World Games.

For your own gymnasium, CPS offers free DIALux lighting simulation to help plan fixture positions and compare a proposed layout before selecting equipment.

1. One gymnasium, two sporting settings

A multi-purpose university gym needs lighting for more than one arrangement. The supplied photographs show a basketball court, while the event images document the hall prepared for judo. Court markings, mat positions and camera directions do not necessarily share the same lighting grid.

The original project brief described uneven light, visible flicker and excessive spill. CPS’s task was to renew the indoor gym lighting around the existing circular catwalk and roof structure, balancing light on the playing area with visibility of athletes for cameras.

The CPS project video record describes a broadcast-focused retrofit completed in nearly two months. It reports Grade VI performance under the project’s JGJ 153-2016 brief; that classification is not a blanket approval for another venue or sport.

2. Layout evidence behind the lighting

The source includes a basketball-based lighting calculation drawing, not just photographs of a bright hall. It shows a roof-mounted arrangement and the aiming lines used to distribute light across the court. This is useful evidence of layout work behind the installation.

A second calculation sheet lists two camera planes in a scene labelled “6. TV.” Their values are reproduced below as simulation results, not post-installation measurements or a complete judo acceptance report. The plane labels are retained because their physical camera directions are not specified.

Horizontal illuminance describes light reaching the playing surface; camera-facing vertical illuminance helps reveal athletes and movement. A convincing design must examine both, together with uniformity, glare and camera flicker behaviour. A high average lux value alone does not establish broadcast suitability.

3. LED sports floodlights and current options

The current CPS case listing identifies the Sirius Projection Light, 200–1200W family. The historical narrative also describes modular LED sports floodlights. For a new enquiry, the catalogue models below provide a starting point for selection; they are not an as-built inventory of this 2019 installation.

Images are catalogue references displayed at comparable sizes, not physical-scale comparisons.

Roof height, available mounting positions, court coverage and camera directions determine the wattage mix and optics. Specify the exact driver, dimming interface and environmental rating with CPS rather than transferring every number from a generic product table into a project specification.

4. What CPS brought to the project

CPS combined venue-specific lighting calculations, luminaire supply and installation support. The practical aim was a coordinated indoor sports lighting solution: equipment positioned for the hall rather than selected only by wattage.

For a new enquiry, define the proposed supply and support scope around four practical tasks:

  • Layout and aiming: model the existing catwalk and proposed beam directions.

  • Fixture selection: match the required distribution and mounting conditions to the lighting target.

  • Controls: align the specified control interface and operating scenes with venue use.

  • Handover: document aiming, selected models and acceptance measurements for maintenance.

For a basketball and judo venue, agree the lighting requirement for each arrangement before procurement. Assess glare from player and spectator positions, and test the actual camera settings if broadcasting is required. Commissioning should verify the installed layout against the approved model.

5. Evidence a lighting buyer can review

For a buyer evaluating a sports lighting supplier, this case provides three kinds of evidence: venue photographs, calculation drawings and a documented international-event application. The original Wuhan gym lighting case video offers an additional view of the project.

CPS’s manufacturing and company profile identifies a business established in 2005 and a Huizhou production base. Its lighting testing laboratory lists photometric, electrical and reliability equipment. Buyers can request evidence for the proposed model, not assume every catalogue option shares the same specification.

For customization, review the OEM/ODM manufacturing capabilities and agree the required documentation, supply scope and warranty terms. Overseas installation responsibilities should be clear in the quotation.

6. Start with your venue layout

Planning LED basketball court lighting or a multi-purpose gym retrofit? Share a venue plan or dimensions, mounting heights, intended sports, camera positions where relevant and project location.

Request a free DIALux lighting simulation from CPS to review a proposed layout and discuss suitable fixtures. If the hall changes between basketball and another sport, include both arrangements so the lighting proposal can account for them.
